Latest News Stories About the Tanning Industry

Educational Materials Can Alter Young Women's Attitudes About Tanning, May Reduce Skin Cancer
ScienceDaily (2008-10-20) -- A new study indicates that educational literature can influence young women's use of indoor tanning, not by raising their fear of skin cancer but by changing their attitudes about indoor tanning and promoting healthier alternatives for changing appearance.

Law prohibits youths from tanning without consent
Carrol County Times (2008-09-29) -- Brittany Leitz-Cicala fought hard to make sure no teenager would have to go through what she went through all for the sake of a tan. Leitz-Cicala, a Chesapeake Beach resident, became addicted to tanning at the age of 17. The habit resulted in melanoma and 34 surgeries since her diagnosis to make sure she is cancer free. Starting Wednesday, anyone younger than 18 will not be permitted to receive a tan from an artificial tanning device without a parent or legal guardian present to give written consent to a owner, employee or operator of tanning salons in Maryland.

More Than Skin Deep: There's No Such Thing As A 'Safe' Suntan, Researchers Warn
ScienceDaily (2008-09-18) -- There may be no such thing as a 'safe' tan based on ultraviolet radiation, according to a series of papers published in the journal Pigment Cell Melanoma Research.

Addicted To Tanning Beds? 'Tanorexia' Common Among University Students
ScienceDaily (2008-09-04) -- A new study conducted at a large university finds more than 25 percent of those surveyed reported symptoms of tanning dependence, including symptoms similar to alcohol and drug-addicted individuals. Suggestively, the study also found those with a tanning dependence tend to be more likely to be thin and smoke cigarettes than others.

Skin Cancer Prevention Helped By New Research, Regulations
ScienceDaily (2007-11-15) -- It is estimated that more than 1 million new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in the United States in 2007. While most skin cancers have excellent cure rates if detected and treated early, dermatologists stress that prevention is still the best medicine. In fact, dermatologists are hopeful that the recent introduction of a new law aimed at warning Americans about the risks of indoor tanning devices and new sunscreen regulations could prevent skin cancer in future generations and reduce the estimated $1.5 billion annual financial toll associated with treating non-melanoma skin cancers alone.
